The History of Women in Design in Pictures

Annie Lou Rogers Cartoonist Creates the antiwar pro suffrage Cartoon for publication for Judge in 1913.



 Nell Brinkley Artist and Illustrator creates the illustration The Three Graces with text, 'Any man who loves and reveres his mother and his country should idolise, if he worships t all, the three graces, Suffrage, Preparedness and Americanism,' 1916.
 Marie Neurath Information design and logotype, she begins working with Otto Neurath on the system of representing visual information, she later renames it Isotype 1925.
Eleanor Treacy becomes Art Director for Fortune Magazine in 1930.
 Helen Federico Works for Fortune magazine 1943.
Lillian Bassman:Junior Bazaar is launched with Bassman as art director 1945.








 Cipe Pineles becomes the Art Director at Seventeen Magazine 1947.
Elaine Lustig Cohen becomes art director of Meridian Books.
Ruth Ansel becomes the art director of Harper's Bazaar 1962.

Paula Scher begins her career design record covers as art director for CBS and Atlantic Records 1970.

Barbara Kruger exhibits her first works combining appropriated photographs and fragments of superimposed text at Contemporary Art Center 1979.










Guerilla Girls use their innovative design skills to create work that exposed sexism in the design industry are formed 1985

Graphic Birdwatching is founded by Valeria Hedmen which celebrates and promotes the work of women in design 2009.


Jesscica Hische leaves Louise Fili Ltd as a senior designer and foundes Jessica Hische Design and Illustration, shortly after she creates the typeface buttermilk 2009.




Slanted Magazine dedicates its 10th issue to women in design 2010.
