Composition: Dual-platform Formats, Paul Bailey

This work shop with Paul looked at how you can compose a piece of design to satisfy two functions for example in our brief a dust-jacket that opens up to be a poster. First we looked at the functions of both a dust jacket and poster.

Dust Jacket
Presents information about the book
Protects the Book
Inside flap can work as a bookmark
Its not attached and it could cover the book or not
It can get trashed and is considered an after though in terms of value
Competes against other books and the cover should convey the atmosphere and reaction
Poster
Used to promote and inform
Range-can be any size, colour and shape
Can be used to decorate and can be made to last as a piece of art
Different functions and uses for different people
Versatile, can be used in different ways within a location

We were given the brief to fold a paper around our book without cutting it, concentrating on the folds to create variety in the dust-jacket

This was my example
We were then given two images of a sun and the sentence, London through the eyes of a designer in a range of typefaces. We had to create the dust-jacket remembering that it will get folder out into a poster. Principles of Composition
harmony
unity
opposition
balance
variety
depth
repetition

Paul unravelled my dust-jacket to see if it worked as a poster and it wasn't as successful in that form! Also it took ages to fold back into the dust-jacket which was something I hadn't thought about.
