Today in Paul's crit group we were discussing our ideas for the Newspaper Club and how we were going to explore them through research. His advice was to 'Disrespect Graphic Design'. In the way that through the technique of Six Thinking Men we had to generate numerous questions in order to consider every angle the brief could be looked at many of us were holding back on the questions, knowing that we would have to question real graphic designers and so bought to the table a lot of boring samey questions.
So through Paul's advice of disrespecting graphic design he gave us the go ahead that you do not have to be polite, and to really find something that is different and creative you have to unearth things that maybe people have been scared to ask before....and in turn i reckon the graphic designers and people we ask will appreciate being asked something that is a bit more thought provoking and provocative.
Here are the subjects that our group were considering:
- How do designers use the resources available to them - friends, materials, location, technology?
- How do graphic designers operate within interdisciplinary practice?
- Recognition - who's decides - who judges - where - when - why?
- Representation of design objects - doesn't retouching product shots abstract the reality?
- Dark/light side of Graphic Design?
- Education = Success?
- Do graphic designers think in 2D?
- Where does integrity sit within graphic design? Where is the integrity in working for free (internships, small budget initiatives)?
- The Total Designer
- Humanity/Personality - the value of being nice.
However after this session it has made me realise that I want to look at something that is a bit different but also something that I can relate too....best get thinking!
