On my way home tonight I was reading the Evening Standard and came across an article about the new Burberry man bag. And was a bit disappointed about the commentary that followed the article which stated, 'The 'IT' bag, the obnoxiously overpriced symbol of an empty soul, a phenomenon among women. Is this a trend that is about to engulf us men too?' I couldn't help but feel a little bit that it was condescending towards women...it was acceptable that women are owners of the 'obnoxiously overpriced symbol of an empty soul' however it seems as though he was saying that it was totally unacceptable that a man could be 'engulfed by the trend'.
It got me thinking about my theme for the Newspaper Club, 'What does a graphic designer need to learn and be able to do to successfully function in the 21st century?' and prompted me to think that even in the 21st Century and even in the industry of graphic design, do old fashioned views of the roles of women and men in society still exist? And does this effect the industry?
As a female attempting to enter the industry of graphic design will my gender effect me? I hope not however it is definitely something I want to investigate further as I had never considered it before. Is it still a man's world? Yes...or perhaps thats what us women lead the men to believe...
