After meeting at St Martins my tutor at LCC set us the brief to get into groups and find design studios. The idea was to get us introduce us to the design industry by setting us the task to:
- interview a graphic designer,
- take a photograph inside a design studio
- get a graphic designers business card
I wasn't so sure about this brief I felt that even if we did manage to find any studios, surely they wouldn't want to talk to us...or even worse how would we talk to them!
How wrong I was. The most valuable lesson I learnt from today is that I have entered the NICEST industry going. Almost immediately we walked down a random back street and found a plaque with 'Collective Approach' and on a whim we buzzed up and asked if they were graphic designers and they were!
He invited us into his studio and told us how he got into design and gave us lots of really valuable advice to build up years of placements until you find out exactly what you want to do and build experience. He also introduced us to what his studio did and how it ran. He even offered us to get in contact with him for placements!
After Collective approach we wondered around for a while but couldn't find another graphic design studio. So after whacking out google maps Sam directed us to 'Main Titles' where we met Tracey Martin.
Main Titles works with designers and marketers to produce 3D model mock ups of packaging for market research purposes. They work with world renowned brands such a Hovis, Armani, Smirnoff and Lucozade. And she was more than happy to chat to us and offer advice! Tracey gave us lots of design contacts with there number and things to look at that are prominent in the design industry. She even told us to tell them that she personally recommended us, to help us get our foot through the door!
-Dew Gibbons: Nick Vaus
-Radford Wallis: Mark Wood
-Design Bridge Landor
- Creative Handbook
-Dieline
On Tracey's recommendation, and because it was the closest, we went to Dew Gibbons where we met with Nick Vaus. He took us through to the conference room and bombarded us with questions about what we want to do, where we are from (he went to LCC!!)
It was really nice to have someone that was well established in the design industry and who had worked with so many leading brands to be so interested in our work but more so who had actually been to our college! He also asked us to bring our portfolios to him as he was interested in how design was being taught currently and he offered us paid work placements!
This by far was the most interesting and worthwhile brief!
