Typography

At LCC we had a workshop on Typography. This really interested me as even though I studied Graphic Design it was never a topic that my teachers had concentrated on and so I had never been able to explore it. We explored ideas such as, do we need to leave a space between each word? and What are the smallest elements? How do they relate to one another? in a piece of text as a group. We discussed how typography had evolved, as with most design developments, in responses to advances in politics, economics, society and technology and then explored the key movements in the productions of typography.

I explored the letter 'g' through the headings of 'scale', 'layer', 'outline', 'invert' 'section' 'deconstruct', and 'recompose' through tracing and redrawing the letter paying attention to parts such as the lobe, bowl, counter and the link/neck - some of the mechanical words we learnt.
We then explored typefaces that are in use today such as Futura- Medium condensed (above) by writing our name. We had to ensure the baseline/ascender/descender lines and the leading and tracking.

By using our names, something we are really familiar with it was much easier to explore the different typefaces and all the mechanical words we had learnt. For example you can see the different effect the typefaces create when varied.  I really enjoyed this session.
