For weeks the world speculated about Catherine Middleton's dress and today it was finally revealed as she walked into Westminster Abbey. The choice of Sarah Burton is a 'fist pump moment' for everyone who celebrates British fashion and design. Fashion is one thing that Britain is truly world class and that could not have been better represented by Sarah Burton, the predecessor of Alexander McQueen. Although Kate Middleton has been dubbed by the press for being a bit fashion shy and play it safe at times this bold choice of designer, who in recent months has been surround in the controversy of suicide and tragedy, was an inspired choice, as McQueen is renowned for telling stories through their clothes which is exactly appropriate for the day.
As she is constantly compared to Diana within the media many people were speculating whether Kate's dress would be inspired of that of Princess Diana's, who chose a voluminous taffeta Elizabeth Emanuel gown with a 25ft train however the message of the McQueen design was clear in its statement of making her look every bit the princess...but nothing like Diana which I feel was a bold and successful move.
The choice of Burton, who was Alexander McQueen's right-hand woman and succeeded him after his death, is a bold move by Kate and a celebration for British fashion. Burton is one of the most talented designers working today, not just in Britain but in the world. Her clothes are fearlessly creative and realised with a fierce attention to detail. Her most recent show featured a corset made of mosaic porcelain, which had been made as one piece, deliberately shattered into shards, and then resewn, piece by piece.
Although Princess Catherine definitely got it right on the day there were many guests who definitely got it wrong...really wrong!
Tara Palmer Tomkinson took the seasons cobalt blue trend a little too far |
At least someone paid homage to Diana's taffeta dress I guess |
Nick Clegg's wife definitely is brave |
Samantha Cameron wearing Burberry but no hat? |
Princesses Eugenie's wearing Vivienne Westwood and Princess Beatrice wearing Valentino and Philip Treacy hat |
Is it me or do they genuinely look like they just came from playing the ugly sisters in a Cinderella pantomime!
