After our Newspaper club presentation and crit today I really want to work on the layout and design of my newspaper. I just really need to focus on the content now, what goes in what stays out? I have got some really good feedback from Slanted magazine's editor Julia Kahl as well as many other graphic designers.
In my presentation today I showed my current pdf of really basic layout ideas, ways in which I might take it and how I may direct my content to get the message across. I like the bold quotes but need to work on the colour, type and layout of them. And after todays crit Alex Jarvis bought to light the issue of copyright (using Kate Moross's work could be an issue!).
Interim Feedback from Darren Raven and Alex Jarvis:
Great choice of theme – nice and focused and very interesting. Maybe you need to spend more time on the look and feel of the newspaper – using other people’s work might have copyright issues? Maybe quickly gather more designers opinions on this matter?
We like the use of big provocative quotes in bold simple sans serif type. A great theme that deserves a lot of work to really make it an interesting visually read. We be more than happy for a theme such as this to represent the FdA as a course newspaper – it shows we’re more than capable of holding a meaningful debate. What do your fellow female students think about females in graphic design? Could be good to ask them? What’s the difference between female graphic design and male? The use of message board posts could be good?
Ideas/Content: 8/10
Engagement: 7/10
Research: 5/10
WHAT I NEED TO DO NOW:Try to marry content and design
Try to resolve research within the next few days
Work with the material qualities and scale of the paper
Simplify the content into a narrower focus and cover this in more depth
