A Boy Named Sue...

Something that I have learnt about the design industry is that a name can get you a long way. Design companies thrive on word of mouth. Having a original, fun name makes you stand out and makes your clients remember you. It also gives you a solid foundation to build up corporate branding. Generally the reason why people are calling on your services is because they have no idea about design and further more its probably usually their secretary who will do a quick google search to find a designer. So a name that stands out can be the difference between getting a job or not.

Believe it or not but if you hear about a designer from word of mouth your initial preconceived judgement is going to be purely based on their name. A brand name can help you stand out against the competition and can reflect the company, represent your service and can contribute to customer loyalty. Just like the Johnny Cash Song, 'Boy named Sue' where the father named his son Sue before he left as he knew he wouldn't be there and when your a boy named Sue you will have to be tough to survive the real world.

I have read somewhere that to make an 'original' name you need to take an adjective and a noun that wouldn't usually go together and put them together. For example 'Blue monkey', you can imagine what style the design would be like, fun, a bit comical, big and loud, it would definitely get you noticed but at the same time businesses will be less likely to select you from other more serious designers. So it is definitely really important to think of a powerful name!

Here are some successful names that I think stand out well:
Someone
The Mandate Press
Edustries
Sliced Orange
Light PLague
Noisy Decent Graphics
Nothing Something
