Narrative Workshop

Today I had a narrative workshop, the aim was to understand how cropping an image can alter the viewer's reading of the image by selecting and editing, zooming in or zooming out and changing the format of an image to produce a narrative. First of all we did a group task where we had to select nine images and then crop or enlarge them paying particular attention to nine different  specifications such as wide angle horizontal, crop to enhance the emotional impact and crop to abstract. then compare it to the original image.
This is one of the 9 images: Crop to enhance the emotional impact.

It enabled me to see how a different crop or enlargement on a photograph or image can completely change the meaning of  it and how people would interpret it, especially when cropping to abstract.
The next task was to go through newspapers selecting images that could be made into a narrative sequence following words such as moment to moment and active to active.

The next task was to cut out all the images and headlines and subheadings that I could find in my newspapers. Once I had done that I had to take four images and apply random headings or subheadings to the image to give it a completely different meaning to the image  and nake different narratives.

The narrative workshop was really interesting as it enabled me to see the importance of the cropping and editing of an image and how much it can change the way that people interpret it. This was also important in what heading or subheading was chosen to follow a particular image as again it can completely change the meaning for example from serious to humorous.
